In gathering stories for Tell Them We Are Rising: The History of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, we’ve learned that the love of HBCUs is multilayered and cross-generational. In many ways, the HBCU homecoming experience is the ultimate portrayal of that love, as year after year HBCU students, friends, alumni and faculty come through in droves to celebrate not only the homecoming of their prospective teams, but the homecoming of their HBCU family. From family lineages that trace back to one of the original HBCUs, to ancestral traditions, like the art of step-dancing, there is a certain sacredness and intimacy that permeates these homecoming events.
That is why we are beyond thrilled to launch our #HBCUrising Homecoming Tour. The Tell Them We Are Rising digital team is headed to seven HBCUs this fall to document the unique festivities at each school, interview students, alumni, faculty and staff, and invite the HBCU community at large to visit our newly launched site, HBCUrising.com.
Check out the map above to track our tour – and make sure to check us out if we’re in your area! Contribute photos of your homecoming experience to our Instagram album using #HBCUrising, which will be featured on our digital yearbook later this month. We want to invite each and everyone of you to rise with us as we celebrate the legacy of these important institutions.
We cannot be more excited to experience firsthand the legendary HBCU Homecoming Experience!
We can’t wait to see you!
