As part of the historically black Southern University System, SUSLA functions as a two-year campus with an emphasis on providing typical college and university work. The institution was opened for instruction on September 19, 1967, after Governor John H. McKeithen signed ACT No. 42. Today, the school occupies eleven buildings on 103 acres of land in Northwest Shreveport.
